It’s simple enough for clods like me to use for simple projects like editing footage from my GoPro Hero2. It has very good tutorials covering pretty much every aspect, including some frankly amazing special effects – I’m sure a lot of other products can do similar effects but creating them is especially easy. Rotating video when I’ve accidentally knocked my camera askew while riding motorcycles off-road is trivial.
Not many software packages out there that I like enough to do that. If you have a dual-monitor setup you can have the preview play full screen on the secondary monitor while the UI stays in the primary one, which makes life easier. That’s actually quite a handy thing to do. I ride dual-sport motorcycles with the GoPro on a chest mount harness. I just open 3 or 4 instances of Movie Studio and drag and drop a video into each, then render the video in lower resolution so it doesn’t eat up so much disk space.
That’s much better than the serial method of dragging a video clip in, wait for it to render, save it to disk, drag another video clip in and render that etc. I’m generally not a huge fan of Sony due to its love of proprietary hardware and interfaces, but I’ve been buying stuff from their software division for years and it has been an excellent experience every time..
Reasonable prices, reasonable upgrade policies, reasonable licensing, very reliable software and it presents the features most needed without overwhelming the user with all the zillions of complex features it contains.
I don’t hand out 5 stars lightly, this is good stuff, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to anyone. I have been using Sony Movie Studio 12 Platinum for many years and have had no issues at all. The only problem is that it lacks 4k video support.
Partially because of my dated hardware but also because of concerns about Movie Studio since Sony sold it off I have been hesitant to upgrade to the latest versions so I was happy to see that this version was available; it has 4k support and was still part of the Sony portfolio of products.
There is a number of things that have changed, nothing really drastic, maybe a little more cumbersome, such as, whereas in MS 12 you can create a fade by simply pulling on a corner of your clip, in MS 13 you now need to click on a ‘Fade’ button that sits below the time line, then pull on the corner of your clip, and then click the button again to disable it see included image. Seems to me they were just looking to futz with enough things to justify it being called an upgrade; the addition of 4k was enough IMHO.
NOTE: if, like me, you are going to use this on an older machine, make sure it has a dedicated graphics card; I had mine shut off and when I installed the software I got a warning that the integrated graphics on the 4th gen Intel 17 processor may not be suitable to use with the NewBlue titler software included in this bundle.
Derek who produces the videos and runs the site is a wealth of knowledge and always eager to help you out. I bought this to help edit movies that I make for a local public access. I use to like the old Microsoft Movie Maker, until they changed it with Windows 8 and above. So I switched to Movie Studio, which was suppose to be easy. Basic layout was easy. I spent a lot of time checking reviews for the most reliable program for editing and burning blu ray disc’s.
Make sure you order the Platinum version at the very least, as it includes several additional programs. One of those is required to actually set up and burn a disc. The bare bones version of Movie Studio 13 does not include these.
As for the program, it runs well on my system which is a high-end gaming system. Keep in mind that although there is a help feature, your best instructions for using it will be from Utube videos.
There are several others, some of which concentrate on particular problems, but if you stick with the steep learning curve it will do all you want it to do. Quite frankly I’m just a beginner, but after banging my head against the wall and re-reading or re-watching the videos, you can get it to do what you want.
You are almost forced to edit in a linear fashion because there is no preview monitor. Double click on a clip and it goes straight to the timeline.
It is not a fast interface to use to try simple things like adjust audio with keyframes. There is no use for this in a professionally written segment. I’m still trying to make it work for me but every little thing is a struggle even when I’ve looked up on YouTube what to do to make it work the way I want.
I would caution the buy of this as someone who has worked in a high market. I’m still trying to find a nice alternative to use at home for creative editing but at this point I can’t recommend this. I haven’t tried the FX yet though and am eager to see how good they are. See all reviews.
